IRS CE categories (EAs & Tax Preparers): Federal Tax Update = recent legislative / form changes. Federal Tax Law = general federal tax topics. Ethics = Circular 230 / professional conduct.
NASBA Field of Study (CPAs): Technical = accounting, auditing, tax, IT, ethics (reg.), etc. Non-Technical = practice mgmt, personal dev, general software. Many state boards cap non-technical hours at ~50% of total CPE.
MD Individual Tax Preparer (16 hrs / 2-yr renewal, COMAR 09.38.02): Satisfy the 4-hour Maryland requirement with either 4 hrs MD Update or 2 hrs Ethics + 2 hrs MD Update. The remaining ~12 hrs come from Federal Tax.
